Internship Reflection
Internship Reflection and Personal Development
During this internship, I strengthened my research, analytical, and written communication skills. I also became more proficient in organizing information and working independently in a remote environment. A key contribution I made was helping identify grant funding that could support and sustain community-based organizations. Additionally, I assisted in sponsorship and award applications, directly contributing to the visibility and funding potential of these organizations.
In terms of growth areas, I am continuing to work on building confidence in high-level professional settings, especially when communicating with leadership. I also aim to further develop my grant writing skills to take on more advanced responsibilities in proposal development.
Academic Connections
My coursework strongly prepared me for this internship. For example, my Healthcare Marketing assignment on industry trends helped me understand how organizations position themselves for funding and communicate their value. My Strategic Planning project for IU Saxony Hospital gave me experience analyzing organizational strengths and needs, which was directly applicable when matching nonprofits with appropriate grants. Additionally, my Health Finance and Budgeting assignment helped me better understand financial documents and funding structures, which is important when reviewing grant requirements and budgets.
While my courses provided a strong foundation, I found that more hands-on experience with grant writing would have been beneficial. I also observed that real-world nonprofit work often requires flexibility and adaptability, which can differ from the more structured approaches taught in class. Overall, my academic experiences played a key role in preparing me for this internship and allowed me to apply my knowledge in a practical, impactful way.
